#25 -- Best Songs of 2008

Dónde está la Playa by The Walkmen

Daunting, almost haunting, is the best way to describe this song. But then the song will swing, giving us a hint of optimism, only to shift back to the dauntlessness of it all. It's a powerful song, with cagey guitars and a rolling drum beat.

In a way, it's weird to kick off a best of list with a song like this, but it also makes sense. 2008 was an odd year—the pessimist and the optimist were both right and had a lot to live for—and this song is that balance. The pessimistic opening changes over the course of the song revealing a closing that is strangely optimistic—if only because what we know at the end sounds a lot better than what we heard at the beginning.

The Rat

The Rat by The Walkmen

2004--23rd Birthday
To be honest, I don't really remember this birthday. I was back in Chicago, D hadn't moved in yet, so I was probably splitting my time between my parents house and our place in Hyde Park, and that being the case I'm sure I went home and celebrated by birthday with my parents and little sister. What we did... I haven't a clue. I'm sure it was a pleasant birthday as I was beginning to come out of the fog that was graduating from college.

Are uneventful birthdays a bad thing? Of course not. In fact, I could use more uneventful birthdays.

As for the song... the summer of 2004 saw me listen to this album a countless number of times. It's one of my favorite albums of the decade, and this is probably the signature song—the drums hit home and the guitar work is fantastic. A great song almost any way you slice it or want to look at it.

News Year's Eve

New Year's Eve by The Walkmen

The song just shuffles along, in a melancholy sort of way. The lyrics are mostly forgettable, unless of course you are in that sort of mood. In the sort of mood where things end and you're not sure why. Sure you could press along, another one night stand, but there's a lot to figure out. I think we all know how that feels. I know, I know how that feels. And it sucks.

The music's loud, in your room, turn it down
There's a neighbor who can't take it any more
I'll take your hand, in another one night stand
there's a lot for us to figure out

So if this is how it ends, well lock the door behind you then and let
me down easy

The music's loud in your room turn it down, but the more we talk, the
less we understand

Thinking of a Dream I Had

Thinking of A Dream I Had by the Walkmen (14/365):

It just rocks… I love it. The drums, the guitar, the organ… if someone asked me to pick a song that sounds like New York at night, this is the song I'd pick. I could careless if you're going uptown or downtown to the Upper East side or the Village… you're waiting for the subway line, you're gonna have a good time to night, you don't want to be left alone... just everything about this song sounds like a night out in New York. Meeting random people, laughing, fun, and the fact that you're in New York which is always cool. And that's what this song is... cool.
